Environment art is where a lot of game worlds live or die. This course is built around one central project: constructing a small but complete game environment from a concept brief to a finished, lit, and rendered scene inside Unreal Engine 5.

Modular design as a working method

You will learn to build a modular asset kit, walls, floors, trim pieces, props, and then use it to assemble a scene efficiently. This mirrors how environment artists work at studios, where reusability and consistency across a level matter as much as individual asset quality.

The course also covers Megascans integration, Lumen lighting, and Nanite for high-detail meshes. These are tools that have changed how environment art gets made, and understanding them practically is worth more than a theoretical overview.

Scene composition and storytelling through space

A technically clean scene that looks empty or confusing is not useful. Several sessions focus on layout, focal points, and how to guide a player's eye using geometry and light together. Instructor Petra Vanhanen, who has shipped two indie titles, reviews final scene submissions and provides written feedback.

  1. Stage 1 - Reading environment concept art and extracting an asset list
  2. Stage 2 - Modular kit planning and first asset blockout
  3. Stage 3 - Modeling wall, floor, and trim modules in Blender
  4. Stage 4 - Tileable texture creation in Substance Designer
  5. Stage 5 - Prop modeling and hero asset creation
  6. Stage 6 - Unreal Engine 5 scene assembly and layout
  7. Stage 7 - Terrain sculpting and Megascans integration
  8. Stage 8 - Lumen lighting setup and mood development
  9. Stage 9 - Foliage, decals, and scene dressing
  10. Stage 10 - Final polish, screenshot composition, and portfolio submission
What You Will Work On

Each module builds directly on the previous one. You will produce real assets — low-poly game meshes, UV-mapped characters, and optimised environment props — that can go into a portfolio.

Sessions run over live video with screen sharing, so you can watch technique applied in context rather than following written instructions alone.

Between sessions, short exercises reinforce the key skill covered. Feedback is given on your actual files, not just on screenshots.
